Cleanup event planned at Famagusta’s Çanakkale wetland

Two environmental groups will hold a cleanup and awareness event at the Çanakkale Fresh Water Wetland in Famagusta on Saturday morning.

According to reports by Halkın Sesi and Yeniduzen, the event will be organised by the Her Daim Doğa Dostları Group and the Cyprus Wetlands Community. It is scheduled to run from 07:00 to 08:00 beside the Famagusta Alevi Cultural Association picnic area.

The organisers say the activity is intended to remove waste from the wetland and draw attention to the importance of wetland areas.

Yusuf Şentuğ, chair of the Her Daim Doğa Dostları Group, said the site had been polluted by plastic, metal and other human waste. He said the pollution created an unattractive environment and seriously threatened wildlife.

Şentuğ also called for greater environmental awareness and responsibility towards nature and the city.
