The KTMMOB Chamber of Computer Engineers has called for families, schools, public institutions and the technology sector to work together to improve children’s digital safety in North Cyprus.
In remarks reported by Halkın Sesi, Chamber President Esat Gürhan said children can face online harms including cyberbullying, unsuitable content, exploitation, fraud, misuse of personal information and excessive screen use. He said approaches to online services can also encourage addictive use.
Gürhan said the chamber’s Safe Internet Trainings, delivered with the Ministry of National Education and Telsim, are now in their 16th year and have reached more than 60,000 students. The sessions cover subjects including creating strong passwords, protecting personal data, recognising cyberbullying and online fraud, assessing reliable information and seeking help.
He called for safe internet use and digital citizenship to become permanent parts of school curricula, alongside regular free training for parents and teachers across North Cyprus.
Gürhan also urged internet providers to give clear information about family and child-profile options, including transparent procedures for activating and cancelling them. For online platforms, he called for high privacy settings by default, child-safe design, effective complaint channels and swift response mechanisms.
He said any age-assurance measures should be based on data minimisation, proportionality, security and independent oversight.
The KKTC Digital Security Portal, eguvendesin.gov.ct.tr, offers guidance for children, young people, families and educators on bullying, cyberbullying, digital addiction and children’s rights, Gürhan said.
