A Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) was found dead in Yeşilırmak, according to Nature Park Director Kemal Basat.

Basat said the cause of death had not yet been established and that a necropsy was underway.

He estimated the global population of Mediterranean monk seals at 800 to 1,000 and the island’s population at approximately 20 to 22 animals. Basat said the loss of even one seal posed a serious threat to the future of the species because of its small population.

He also called for greater attention to protecting Mediterranean monk seals while they are alive, saying conservation efforts can do more before an animal dies.

The information was reported by Yeniduzen.
