Değirmenlik-Akıncılar maps mosquito breeding risks in 18 villages
Değirmenlik-Akıncılar Municipality says fieldwork in 2025 and 2026 identified 560 potential mosquito breeding sources across 18 villages.
Değirmenlik-Akıncılar Municipality says it has created a risk map of potential mosquito breeding sources across 18 villages as part of its Poison-Free City Project.
According to the municipality, teams surveyed homes, gardens and shared-use areas during fieldwork conducted in 2025 and 2026. The work identified 560 potential breeding sources, which were used in preparing the map.
The municipality says its teams inspect identified locations every 10 days and apply biological larvicide based on larval development and assessed risk. Inspections and treatments are recorded, while the risk map is updated as work continues.
Focus on larval control
Laden Serinsu of the municipality’s Health and Social Support Branch said the programme prioritises eliminating breeding sources and controlling mosquitoes at the larval stage rather than spraying adult mosquitoes.
Serinsu said biological control aimed at breeding sites can prevent up to 95% of larvae from developing into adult mosquitoes. The figure is an estimate attributed to Serinsu.
Residents were advised to keep water tanks covered; empty and clean open containers at least weekly; stop tyres and unused items from retaining water; and maintain swimming pools. Serinsu also called on residents to report suspected mosquito breeding sources to the municipality.
The municipality says the project is intended to manage mosquito populations at their source through planned monitoring and treatment across the villages it serves.
