Sea turtle hatchlings were released at Eastern Mediterranean University’s Marine Facilities in Famagusta during the 2026 summer release season.
The event formed part of EMU’s sea turtle monitoring and conservation project, led by the university’s Underwater Research and Imaging Centre (SAGEM), according to information from the university carried by local media.
EMU says the project has operated since 2008 on beaches in Famagusta, Yeniboğaziçi and İskele with permission from the Environmental Protection Department under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment.
Its work includes periodic monitoring of nests and efforts to help hatchlings reach the sea safely while addressing beach-access and natural threats.
Clubs affiliated with the District 135 North Cyprus Lions Federation supported the release. EMU Rector Professor Hasan Kılıç and volunteers attended.
Kılıç said sea turtle protection helps foster environmental awareness and support wildlife conservation. Assistant Professor Burak Ali Çiçek, who leads SAGEM, said the project involves public institutions, municipalities, civil-society groups and private organisations.
Çiçek said 80 EMU students, joined by volunteers from other universities, are taking part in fieldwork, nest monitoring and activities to help hatchlings reach the sea.
