The Football Tennis World Championship has opened in Famagusta, bringing teams from 10 countries and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to the city for a four-day competition.

Halkın Sesi reported that the tournament is being held under the authority of the International Football Tennis Federation (FIFTA) and organised by the TRNC Football Tennis Federation. The participating teams are from Iraq, Pakistan, Romania, France, Moldova, Turkey, Hungary, the TRNC, Denmark and Slovakia.

A total of 167 athletes and 10 officials are taking part, according to the report.

The opening ceremony featured speeches by FIFTA and TRNC Football Tennis Federation President Şevket Songur, FIFTA founder Joseph Rotenfluh, Sports Department General Board President İlgen Bağcıer and Eastern Mediterranean University Rector Hasan Kılıç.

The first day’s programme included youth singles, doubles and triples matches. Games are being played each day from 09:00 to 17:00 at Eastern Mediterranean University’s Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Hall.

The championship is scheduled to conclude with the finals on Saturday. Halkın Sesi described the event as supporting the international promotion of football tennis, while also providing athletes with international competition experience and opportunities for sporting solidarity.
