The 2026–27 primary school year in North Cyprus began with the opening of the renewed Çayırova Primary School building, according to Halkın Sesi.
Education Minister Nazım Çavuşoğlu attended the opening with İskele District Governor Ertuğrul Toroslu and Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Mayor Fatma Çimen Tuğlu.
Tuğlu said the former school building had been found unsafe in an earthquake assessment and was replaced. She also said the school does not yet have a children’s playground, which the municipality plans to build.
Çavuşoğlu said prefabricated classrooms had been used to avoid interrupting education while a permanent school project could take two to three years to design, tender and construct. He said the new building had no outstanding deficiencies and that unsafe classrooms would not be used for students, teachers or staff.
The minister also said about 1,900 smartboards had been added across the education system, with a further 300 planned each year to address remaining needs within one or two years.
Separately, Halkın Sesi reported that student transport buses protested on the first day of term after discussions concerning licences, operating certificates, vehicle standards and inspections. Çavuşoğlu said operators had received a 40% increase the previous week and that safe transport had been added to the ministry’s Safe Schools Project.
