The North Cyprus Police General Directorate has issued guidance on what drivers and passengers should do if a vehicle catches fire, as part of Firefighters’ Week. The advice was reported by Yeniduzen and Halkin Sesi.
According to the police guidance, drivers should move the vehicle to a safe location immediately and switch off the engine. Everyone inside the vehicle should then get out and move a safe distance away.
If the fire is small and it is safe to intervene, a fire extinguisher may be used. The police advised directing it towards the centre of the flames.
What to do during an engine fire
The bonnet should not be opened fully during an engine fire, according to the guidance. It should instead be opened slightly so a fire extinguisher can be used.
People should not attempt to tackle a fire that is spreading or cannot be approached safely. In those circumstances, they should move away from the vehicle and contact the fire service through the 199 emergency reporting line.
