Dozens of volunteers collected litter in and around Nicosia’s old town on September 19 during a bicommunal event marking World Cleanup Day, Cyprus Mail and Yeniduzen reported.
The cleanup covered areas on both sides of the divided capital and was organised by Let’s Do It! Cyprus with support from the Green Action Movement.
Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı and Nicosia Municipality Mayor Charalambos Prountzos took part in the activity, according to the two publications.
Prountzos said the initiative encouraged public participation, cleaner neighbourhoods and environmental protection. Harmancı said the event underlined shared environmental challenges and the need for cooperation between the two communities in caring for the city.
Irish Ambassador to Nicosia Sarah Hamilton supported the event, the reports said. India’s High Commission in Nicosia also provided participant T-shirts featuring Mahatma Gandhi.
